VSGC, in partnership with J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (JSRCC), coordinated and delivered a GEOTREK-12 workshop for 16 high school teachers in the service region of JSRCC during the summer of 2013. GEOTREK is sponsored by VSGC and provides hands-on training, resources and support to high-school teachers in Virginia.
The three day workshop provided teachers with hands-on training, classroom-ready materials, and mentoring to support successful integration of geospatial technologies in the classroom.
GIS 200 and 201 were offered at JSRCC in year 2. Lead faculty, Wen Andrews is also participating on a Dominion Power funded project to promote geospatial technologies and the training of high school instructors. [Read more…]
GIS 200 was offered one semester and geospatial topics or content was integrated into an IT systems analysis and design course and an IT capstone project. Geospatial topics such as orienteering and geocaching were also included in recreational and parks courses. GIS200 has been added to the Information Systems Technology program at SWCC to be a required course in the curriculum and other GIS courses are offered as technical electives.
